Outdoor cat turned indoor?

topic posted Wed, January 19, 2005 - 5:19 AM by  offlineLyra
So, I have this outdoor cat(a little runty girl, wonderful cat) about a year old. I might have to move soon, but she'd have to be indoor because she's too small to face a new neighborhood by herself.

My question was: how do outdoor cats take to a new indoor life? Has anyone dealt with this before? Any precautions I should take?

Blessings,
Lyra

I think it depends on the kitty. If she's already used to people and lets you handle her, she would probably do fine. I've had a couple experiences in this area. My last cat, Dori, had been born to a barn cat. He came to me at about 7 mos old and adjusted really well to indoor only. Eventually, I let him out on a leash in a secure location with me present. My current cat, Stormy, came to me when he was about a year old and had been an indoor/outdoor cat. We were his seventh home in that year. He doesn't want to be an indoor only and escapes on a regular basis. However, in both cases, the cats have done well indoors.

This cat is very affectionate, but since she's a runt she's been very skittish.. I can't pick her up yet but I'm working on it. It took me months to get her to let me pet her, but now she's all about the lovin'. *smiles* I love this cat so much. I would be crushed if I had to leave her behind, but I don't want her to go crazy if I move her around and make her stay indoors. I dunno. I worry about her.

It's certainly a valid concern and she will probably go through a period of adjustment. But she will still most likely be better off moving with you than being left behind to fend for herself. Once you move her to the new place, you may be able to let her outside again where she feels more comfortable. She may also take to being an indoor cat who no longer worries about being cold, hungry and lonely. It is a risk, but I think if I were in your shoes, I would move her with me and see how she takes to it all. Good Luck!
